The Occupational Health and Safety Agency for Healthcare (OHSAH) in British Columbia (BC) was conceived between healthcare employers and union representatives.

An accord among the board of directors, ultimately resulted in the creation of OHSAH; an agency with the goal of reducing workplace injuries and illness in healthcare workers and returning injured workers back to the job quickly and safely. The mission of OHSAH was to work with all members of the healthcare community to develop guidelines and programs designed to promote better health and safety practices.

Very interestingly, “pill-crushing” and related employee medical issues and injuries showed up on OHSAH’s radar almost immediately.  It was flagged as such a concern that OHSAH began an initiative with the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Health Technology Research Group to research, design, develop, test and commercialise an automatic/electric pill crusher.

Prototypes were developed and feedback was obtained internally and externally through focus groups and a pilot process where eight identical units were manufactured to allow for testing and evaluation within the workplace setting.

The feedback OHSAH received from each of the user groups was extremely valuable. All of this research and development has culminated in SafeCrush- the most sophisticated, commercial grade automatic pill-crusher in the world.
